After a mission of rescue to Nimbus III, the crew of the Enterprise find themselves on a much more dangerous and disturbing journey, to the center of the galaxy and the forbidden secrets it holds.

A science vessel is severely damaged during its mission to the Xondaii system and the Enterprise is dispatched to investigate and render assistance while Kirk, Spock and Sulu collect data on a nearby spatial rift.
